Preview A Pool: Group B

Group B
Republic of Ireland
Norway
Serbia
Sierra Leone
Portugal
England

Summary:Ireland leads the way in group B. Ireland has consistently gotten an easy group at the draw, and this year is no different. Fielding another dominant team, Ireland has too much skill at every position to not win this group. But Ireland relies heavily on Saskatoon players, and the uncertainty of who will play on any given night could hurt them. They could also be becoming disheartened, as there was talk that Ireland wouldn't even enter a team. Norway was able to make it out of a group last year that included El Salvador, Germany, and Jamaica. Not an easy task. However, Norway can be exposed on defence, and they don't have premier striking ability. Hustle, strong midfield play, and hard work are Norway's attributes in this tournament, not necessarily skill. Serbia was in the easiest pool last year, and only finished 4th in the pool. We've seen them bring in a couple good players from Winnipeg in the past, but there were none last year. If they've convinced some good players to join them, they'll have a chance. Again, another good group for the weaker teams to be in. Sierra Leone is a newcomer, and I know nothing about them. But I REALLY hope they come in with a good team. Portugal was usually a good team, but then last year took a nosedive. They aren't expected to regain their former glory, mainly due to losing a lot of players. They used a lot of players from the Moose Jaw Air Base, but many of those players were transferred before last year. What we might see this year is a much younger Portugal team. A lot of the younger players have ties to some Portugal players, and likely will be recruited by them. If that's the case, Portugal will be a fairly decent team. England is the final team in this group, and while they're not expected to win many games, it sure would be nice to see them play hard and take it to one of the top teams.

Prediction:
Ireland has to be considered the favorite to win all of their games and make it out of the pool. I think they'll get tested by Norway, but ultimately prevail. Norway will make them work very hard for the win, because Norway fits the definition of "playing together as a team," but they don't have the talent to stop Ireland from scoring multiple goals. Norway can win, but it will take a flawless effort. Serbia, Sierra Leone, and England will try and put a dent in Norway's and Ireland's hopes, but it is unlikely. Portugal will have a decent showing, assuming they field the type of team I believe they will. The younger players are often counted out because we don't really know who they are, but they can provide very good reinforcements for a team. If you know of one, I suggest getting them on your team.

In Finishing Order:
Ireland, Norway, Portugal, Sierra Leone, England, Serbia.

i heard ireland was just tired of being hated and going through this every year...i wish theyd quit. But when you get players who have no loyalty and just want to win, I guess youll have a team

Portugal probably won't field the best team this year, but will still do well as they generally play all year together.

It really is unfortunate that there isn't a serious website or chat forum or something about this tournament. Sadly this site gets taken over by junk posts that have nothing to do with the actual tournament like video games and which girls are easy to take home from the bar or whatever.

ok cool guy, whos making comments at 1 am on a friday night, i guess your not a bar picking chicks, u must be picking up chicks in a chat room

this site inst that bad, believe me any site you start theres going to be junk as thats whats really happening in regina soccer from the RSA office down to players , so no matter wat u try nothing is going to change un less individuals change themselves

Also ... why the hell are we renting out facility out to those football clowns ... spitting on our field, ripping up the turf that already sucks ... how about those baseball guys ... wrecking the nets with the balls they hit towards it ...

During the WCP CUP we need to warm up before games, not have those people playing on our fields and yelling at us when we are stretching cause "they paid for field time" during a tournament (wcp cup). It's a soccer facility for crying out loud.

Got to love Regin and how we rent out facility out and still don't have enough money to buy a new turf.

Someone needs to INVESTIGATE DENNIS MORRIS. I'd like to know where all our money is going, and where it all actually is spent. We as a community deserve that much.

First off, it's not "OUR" facility. My understanding is that it is Evraz Place's facility and we rent it from them and they can rent it out to who ever they want. And if WCP Cup teams want a spot to warm up, they can rent out the back fields just like anyone else can. I have training times booked during the tournament that I've had booked since the start of the season and I won't be allowing WCP Cup times to warm up/stretch on my field time either. No different than the regular season..you get your little time before the game to warm up on your field and that's it...why would the WCP Cup be any different?

Just because it's main use is for soccer doesn't mean that we own the place and bend the rules around our use of it.

As for investigating Dennis, most sports organizations have their financial statements available for members and discuss them at AGM's...I'm sure you could give them a call to see the financial records to see where the money is going. Don't get me wrong, I'm not defending Dennis as I don't agree with A LOT of the BS within RSA these days, but I think most of your gripes are factless. Sorry.

@Anonymous "March 1, 2011 9:17 am"

FYI the RSA rents evraz place from October to May, meaning, its RSA that rents it out to other sports teams during that period not Evraz Place.

Now the reason why we see baseball teams and such practice there during WCP CUP is because Dennis does not support the tournament at all. Thats why he tries everything he can to stop it, hence why we can't use the back fields for warm ups, why fees that the WCP committee pay increase each year, etc... I don't really feel like listing down everything...

Don't worry, I got my facts straight ^_^ unlike you...

Dude, the fact is, it's a tournament. We need warm up times, and pardon my language but I don't need fucking baseball people playing when I need to warm up and it's a televised competitive tournament. I'm going to punch the next baseball/football team fuck head who tells me to get off the back fields if that's the case this year. You have my word on that.

RSA charges people a stupid amount of money for everything. Why are guest passes so expensive, and more if your an RSA member. Why is your insurance prices a ridiculous amount for RSA non-members during tournaments?

Saskatoon charges 2 dollars for insurance if you want to play in a tournament and don't belong as a member in any other district. RSA charges almost 30 dollars. You expect people to pay like 70 dollars (fees plus insurance) to play in a stupid RSA tournament. What a joke.

I'd really like to know where all this cash goes as well, since the fees are way too out of hand and people can't seem to grow in the sport of soccer cause of these prices. I agree with the above post. IT'S TIME FOR CHANGE.

Anyone know if Ireland even has a goalie. What's the update on that? Who's in net for them this year. Any good players that we saw last year returning other than Collins? I heard they didn't even know if they had a team this year. I wonder if they will perform. Most of the Irish heritage last year where the guys drinking in the stands.
