Pre-Draw Rankings

Since the draw takes place THIS FRIDAY, I'll update the rankings.

This is to give you an idea of how difficult it will be to get out of the pools once they are drawn. Only a couple teams have rolled out their actual team for the tournament, so I'll say it again, it's tough to judge teams based on exhibition games they play. The top 4 remain at the top, simply because no one else has proven they completely deserve the spot, and the top 4 haven't done enough to lose the spot.

The previous ranking is in brackets.

1(1). Republic of Ireland- Everyone knows how good their team is. They don't need to play exhibition games to prove themselves. They're still the favorite.

2(2). Norway- Though they have lost to Ukraine, they were missing a couple key players. No other team has proven enough to move into the #2 spot yet, so Norway remains.

3(3). England- When this team comes together, they will be very tough to beat. But whether they can play well together remains to be seen. Based on pure talent alone, they hold onto #3.

4(4). Laos-Laos has been together for awhile now, and they practice hard. Once the tournament comes around, their teamwork should be top notch.

5(7). Ukraine- Ukraine has been playing a lot of exhibition games, beating very good teams. They've done enough to warrant moving up a couple spots, but can't yet be put into the top 4.

6(5). Greece- They will have a couple new players that will be able to make an impact once the tournament starts.

7(6). Jamaica- Jamaica's player losses have made this team seem weaker, but never count out a team put together by Kevin Holness.

8(8). Germany- Germany has some very skilled players, and they will be very dangerous. They will make you pay for any mistakes. Eugene Seckler will have this team looking good.

9(9). Portugal- Portugal has played together for quite a while, but they don't have players that can make an impact the way other players can for other teams.

10(10). Scotland- Their team is set and ready to go, but there are still too many holes in the lineup to be considered an elite team.

11(18). Chile- It appears to be true that Chile now has most of the El Salvador players. This gives them some playmakers on a team that still needs to prove themselves. It will be interesting to see if Chile can be a serious contender.

12(11). Canada- This seems to be exactly what Canada wants in terms of ranking. Though they've been practicing together, they haven't played anyone yet. This lack of game experience could hurt them in the tournament.

13(16). Northern Ireland- I know what you're thinking...and NO, it's not because of him. They have played well as a team so far and have proven they can play with good teams.

14(12). Nigeria- Poor showings in exhibition games have led to this drop. Nigeria needs to communicate and play like a team if they want to build on their performance last year. They showed a lot of heart and determination last year, so hopefully they can replicate that.

15(13). Italy- The loss of their best players from last year will hurt them. They are flying low under the radar, so it's tough to say what their team looks like.

16(16). Colombia- Colombia has shown good stuff in their exhibition games, even beating Ukraine. With one or two more good showings with their actual team to prove they aren't a fluke, they will jump quite a few spots, possibly into the top 12.

17(17). Serbia- Serbia is tough to judge this year. They have changed quite a bit and added a couple playmakers, so it's tough to say what kind of team they will roll out.

18(19). Austria- They beat a top team in England, all while England didn't have their entire team out, that's still quite a feat. They move up a spot for now. Like Colombia, if they can prove their victory wasn't a fluke, they will also jump in the rankings.

19(14). Botswana- There hasn't been anything going on with Botswana. Lower ranked teams such as Austria and Serbia have at least organized their team and are playing exhibition games to get themselves ready, but until they show a sign of life, they drop to 19.

20(20). Poland- There has been rumor they've picked up much better players, but they also haven't shown any activity so they stay where they are.

...

On another note, the WCP Cup website has taken down the link to this site. In the future, if someone has a problem or complaint, please e-mail me and let me know. We can discuss the situation and come up with a solution. I don't appreciate people going behind my back to complain to the organizers. It shows a lack of respect and class. If there's problem, talk to me first. You have my e-mail.

I think the biggest thing is that England is still ranked high. People might disagree with that, but who can you even put in that spot? england looks really good on paper and I bet they do good once they're all down here.

Laos shouldn't move up because they've lost to Ukraine and Portugal already. I mean...they haven't even beaten anyone good yet!

Ukraine shouldn't really be top 3 just cause they beat laos and a depleted norway team, but they should move up some. if anyone they have the best chance later on to move up to 3, its them.

Greece obviously shouldn't be top 3

Jamaica obviously shouldn't be top 3

holy team hater lol

Anonymous said...

I think you can make a case to put Jamaica top 3. The last time they played they beat Laos and have finished top 3 every year. Despite losing some players we have seen nothing from them to suggest a huge drop. I believe the top two teams are almost interchangeable with ROI getting the edge for talent. Then there are 3 more teams (England, Ukraine, Laos) to round out the big 6. Heres my top 10:

1.ROI
2.Norway
3.Jamaica
4.England
5.Ukraine
6.Laos
7.Greece
8.Scotland
9.Germany
10.Canada

jamaica top 3 bull they lost the prime bro ,justin manz shane... if they got good players to take there spots i can see them being 7th
no higher then that

andrew banjee pick up wow that will improve your team ... not

Anonymous said...

Jamaica has lost a couple of their top players. This WILL affect them, unless they bring in top players to replace them. I don't think you can keep them at 3 if they've lost 3-4 of their top 6 players. I'd still leave them somewhere around 6th.

Anonymous said...

That's the Prime brothers in midfield, Justin Manz as their top striker, and Shane O'Gilvie as winger or midfielder. Those 4 are the top players for Jamaica and they are gone.

To Clock Cleaner, from what I understand the link was not taken down because of a problem on your part but an issue with contradiction. The event cannot be FIFA sanctioned as "Stop the Racism", when people are attacking other peoples origins, whether they are jokes between friends or not, because people from out of town, or that are new to the city might not know that. I think most people know each other and are fine with some of the trash talk, but we have to remember that means we are also ambassadors of the tournament and as such should always be thinking of how words, phrases can be misread or taken. This tournament get larger every year and because of that more sponsors are looking to have their name be part of it, therefore if their name is attached then the blog can become a liability when degrading or ethnic remarks get mixed into the picture. Finally, just remember if one person thought this was an issue how many more people might also think that the content in the blog is an issue but do not say anything. (Sorry for any misspelled words or fragmented sentences).

I'll kill you... how do you want it?

Anonymous said...

Preferably in the foot.

Anonymous said...

You mean to say they removed the link because of a couple comments??

Someone thinks a team doesn't have the required amount of players of that nationality, and someone takes that as racist?? No opinions allowed!

If people don't like women's soccer, why shouldn't they be allowed to say so? Yeah, let's have a society where no one is allowed to have an opinion if it might hurt someone's feelings a bit. All our comments should be: "Soccer is a fun sport,"
and "I enjoy playing soccer." God forbid someone dislike something.

People are way too sensitive these days, and being politically correct is bull.

Clock Cleaner said...

Thank you for the explanation.

I don't agree with the removal of the link, but obviously I have to accept it. I realize there are quite a few opinions voiced in the comments that won't be shared by everyone, but I'm not about to delete every single opinion that is stated in the comments. It's not a huge deal, but it does make us lose some visitors.

Anyway, what does everyone think of the rankings?

Hope to see everyone at the draw on friday!

Anonymous said...

The rankings are pretty good. I think clock cleaner is usually pretty close.
Who do you think the best free kick takers are? They play a big part in these games.
Who are the top players in the tournament?

Anonymous said...

I think by all means people deserve the right to their opinions, as long as they are respectful in some manner...

It is one thing to say that you don't like women's soccer or that you don't think it is a sport, but when people start saying that women should stick to the kitchen where they belong and things like that, it starts to get away from simple opinions and starts turning derogatory and just plain rediculous.

That sort of thing is just as bad as making any sort of racial comment about african-american, european, native, asian, hispanic, or any other ethnic group and I can see why a FIFA sanctioned organization would be hesitant to maintain ties to a blog with that sort of crap allowed to be said. (No offense intended Clock Cleaner, but overly offensive and ignorant comments like that are unneccessary and should not be allowed if you want to be part of the WCP Cup website)

Clock Cleaner said...

I agree. That's why I deleted those comments a long time ago.

Any comment that goes beyond soccer trash talk and into childish insults is and will be deleted, so I don't see the problem.

Anonymous said...

To the person who is concerned about woman and comparing it to racial slurs, are you really serious? Almost all of the posts were childish but not overly rude. They were people saying they don't like woman's soccer and most of the comments that were over the line were so over the top they were ridiculous and should not be taken seriously at all. Clock cleaner did remove them so where is the harm? I think I speak for the vast majority when I say I'm sick of political correctness gone haywire. This isn't like David Ahenakew or anything, it was 1 or 2 stupid comments that were removed quite quickly. Because of a complainer what happens- the only part of the website that anyone cares about was removed. Talk about over-reaction. In my opinion, if you are concerned about woman's rights, find something more worthwhile to fight about like inequity in wages, sexual harrassment in the workplace etc. that actually are worth the effort. When you over-react and complain about sexist comments regarding something as innocent and harmless as an anonymous blog, you are not helping change people's opinions. You are creating more hard feelings and wasting time better spent elsewhere. For the person who "whined" about this to CBC or WCP, you are a hyper-sensitive individual with too much time on your hands.

A perfect example of how ridiculous this is and how political correctness limits free speech, I didn't feel comfortable quoting the most offensive comments that were made because I was scared there would be further complaints and clock cleaner would have to waste his time removing it.

PS ROI suck!!! Norway are losers and Mike Sweeney is a god!

Anonymous said...

They've lost the only good part of their website because some people are way too sensitive. Not even clock cleaner can say what he wants to because of people of like that.

Well on the bright side, now we can pretty much say anything we want because there's nowhere for those hyper-sensitive losers(man I wish I knew who they were) to complain anymore.

Guess what? Women's soccer is boring to watch! HAHAHAHA what should we do when they announce the women's draw? Someone bring cards! That's my opinion, and if you don't like it, take off eh.

Anonymous said...

one more mike sweeney joke....and I'm hunting down premier player and kicking him in the junk.

Anonymous said...

What makes Canada great is that we are a country of civilized an respectful people. This fear of political correctness and how it limits free speech sound like the rhetoric that has driven the Americans into war. A lot of bigots and racists hide themselves behind this argument. We can criticize ourselves and the difference of opinions and even say what we really mean without being disrespectful. But beware of being a using free-speech to voice neo-Nazi views, slag and degrade women and say we live in a sad world because people can't take it. I assume you have never been on the side of the disenfranchised and oppressed.

Soccer unites.

Anonymous said...

Sorry to everyone by getting boring here but I have to respond to this self righteous clown and then I will shut up on this issue.

Let me get this straight, you are comparing comments made about how women's soccer is boring (admittedly in a rude way) to neo-nazis, oppression and woman haters? Have I missed something here? This is a silly blog where grown men post comments about a tournament that means nothing to the rest of the world. By you making these ridiculous analogies you are minimizing and marginalizing all those issues you feel are so important. You are using the all too common politically correct tactic, you use silly analogies, exaggeration and shock value to try prove and prove your point but all the while you are avoiding the real issue. Unfortunately the very examples you use in your "speech" prove my point. You compare this to Nazi Germany and Americans going to war when you suggest free speech is bad. How much free speech was there in Nazi Germany? What about in the country the Americans first went to war against - Afghanistan (where they treated woman a little worse that they have been treated on this blog)? I'll give you a hint, there wasn't much free speech in either country and look how well that went.

Next time don't just quote from some anti-racism pamphlet you have by the computer, put some independent thought into your comments. By the way, you can respond to me on some political website. Trust me, I will watch them all for your reply and will respond to you! Really, I will!

Anonymous said...

I see you've been taking notes from Limbaugh and Gormley.

There was enough freedom in Nazi Germany to openly criticize Jews. Very much like there is free speech here to stereotype that all Greeks are cooks, and the all minorities are too sensitive to take a "real man's" critique i.e. Racist comments.

Independent thought is getting away from all this right wing rhetoric you spew.

I for one, think that Women worldwide have got a bad deal - so claiming that it's okay if we oppress them just a little bit here is alright in comparison to female circumcisions in Africa or the likes in Afghanistan is preposterous.

Listen, you can put down the Conservative Part panphlet down and begin thinking critically about how your own arguments deter from your own civil liberties.

What? you though you were talking to another one of your boneheaded friends? You want a political argument? Keep own talking your non-sense and I can help you kill this blog with boring shit all month long...

A better alternative is to shush you piehole so we can talk about soccer - unless of course you want to keep this up. You make the call.

Anonymous said...

I don't see why this is all considered boring.. there are eight different posts where people can talk about which team cheats the most and which team sucks the most and all that crap. Personally I see no problem in having one discussion about an actual good issue.

Both guys make sense, I mean I do believe we should show at least some respect, especially if people think we should be allowed to be posted on the WCP Cup site, but people have a right to their opinion. It would just be nice if they delivered it in a way that backed up their own views rather than degrading other people.

I have to disagree with Premier Player when he says we are all adults discussing this, because though his speech was well put together, several others who have posted on here show no signs of being anything close to adults. At times it is like trying to talk with a bunch of annoying little kids running around shouting obscenities and crying, but that's all part of the blog experience.

Personally I think that if you hate women's soccer (just using this as an example as it seems to be the popular topic), then say you don't like it and say why.. there is no need to get into bashing women themselves. That is what I mean when I say respect, express your opinion in a way that gives people a way to see why you think that way rather than just showing them that you are ignorant.

Anonymous said...

This forum is for soccer not human rights. Its the internet I am sure you can find somewhere else for this discussion. If I want to hear you guys squabble over this shit I will go to a non soccer related website. Lets get back on topic please......

Anonymous said...

OR how about you go look at one of the other posts.. it's the internet I am sure there plenty of other discussions you can find to read, why do you need to interrupt an actual discussion?

Anonymous said...

I would like to criticize the anonymous who criticized premier player.

He says: "There was enough freedom in Nazi Germany to openly criticize Jews."

Was that serious? Tell me, what happened to anyone who didn't criticize the Jewish people in Germany(they were then labelled sympathizers). Were they...oh jeez this is tough....murdered? DING DING! YOU'RE CORRECT! So what you're saying is free speech is a government-ordered mandate. Well...congratulations, you are an idiot.

Next he goes on to some jibberish about stereotypying greek people as cooks. Which, of course, makes no sense.

No one is bashing women. If someone says women's soccer is boring, they aren't "oppressing all women." That's not even "oppressing them a little bit." It's nothing. It's one person's opinion. We can have those, can't we? Say you have long hair, and I come up to you and say: I don't like your long hair because it's impractical to have. That's my opinion. Is that oppressing you and making you cut it? No, you're completely free to do whatever the hell you want.

And for pete's sake people, THERE AREN'T ANY COMMENTS ON HERE THAT DEGRADE WOMEN. THERE ARE NONE. Get that through your thick skulls. Go back and read. The entire basis of your argument doesn't even exist!

Anonymous said...

The comments that were degrading women were the ones saying women should stay in the kitchen where they belong, bent over the stove.. crap like that which clock cleaner likely deleted because it was ignorant and degrading.. there was more like that as well and just because it isn't there now doesn't mean it never existed.

Saying women's soccer is boring is fine, it's a simple opinion that isn't too disrespectful, but it is the other stuff that is what is sparking this debate but some people either didn't read it or forgot it was there and are trying to get involved on the basis that what was said is fine. Learn about what you are debating before you outright attack someone else for being thick skulled

Anonymous said...

I said it doesn't exist. If there aren't even any bad comments, then why are you even arguing? There's no point. That was the most useless paragraph you could have written.

You say something about "other stuff." What other stuff? There isn't any other stuff. There's nothing.
No one ever said the kitchen remark was fine. That's why it was removed! What's wrong with you people? Why do you feel the need to talk about deleted comments THAT WERE JOKES?!

It's like complaining about a crappy TV show after it's been cancelled. All you're doing is embarrassing yourself. Save what dignity you have and shut up.

Anonymous said...

Why does it have to resort to that every time? As soon as someone comes on with an opinion different than what most people have they are simply told to shut up.

I said they were there, people did say them. I know they got deleted but they were still said at some point and I was bringing them up because people keep saying that no one ever said anything degrading and they just expressed their dislike for the sport but that is not true.

Personally I don't feel embarrassed about saying what I am saying and I actually enjoy having a disagreement with someone so I get the chance to see another side of things. I won't tell you to shut up or anything.. I would rather see what else you have to say

Anonymous said...

Also, in regards to your analogy to complaining about a canceled TV show. I wasn't complaining about it without it being brought up. If someone tells me that because Titus got canceled and isn't shown anymore that it never existed, I am going to say that it still did exist at some point and show some proof of that if I can.

Anonymous said...

Again, why would you even be talking about 1 or 2 joke comments that were deleted a long time ago? They shouldn't even be brought into this because they're incredibly meaningless.

So...what's your point? Do you think WCP should have taken the link down?

Anonymous said...

Of course they should have if a sponsor asks for it to be taken down it comes down unless we want to give them that money. I personally do not.

Anonymous said...

I wish they'd at least press the sponsor as to why they'd like the link down. The sponsor should have to give reasons. What reasons they could they give, I don't know.

The sponsors also fail to realize the blog has way more traffic than the actual site.

Anonymous said...

If we were having an intelligent debate I would win because I am right. The problem with the politically correct crowd is as soon as someone disagrees with you, you go away from intelligent debate and use your silly analogies of nazi's, racism, degrading woman and my favorite -female circumcisions - to exaggerate the situation and deter everyone from the real issue. Your response to my last comment just proves that. To be honest, that is just as childish as people saying "shut up" or stating their opinion about woman's soccer by saying "they should stay in the kitchen" and not play soccer.

When you go on a blog you should expect people to say stupid things. If some anonymous guy says "woman should stay in the kitchen" I ignore it. If Premier Wall says it, I would want him kicked out of office. I pay little attention to the stupid comments, including the criticisms of me by Mr. Self-Righteous. Also, the negative comments about woman were made in jest. The fact they may not have been very funny doesn't mean anything. Numerous comedians on TV have said much worse things and no one seems to care. Perhaps Mr. Self-Righteous should complain to the sponsors of those programs too!

Or maybe I should complain that you are oppressing me? Your comments are degrading and hurtful! Boo hoo! Clock cleaner please remove those comments comparing me to Limbaugh and Gormley and his suggestion that I think it is OK to oppress woman. It hurts me! Boo hoo!

Agreed this is getting boring and since I am partially responsible by goiing off topic, I will try to bring it back. My picks for surprises of the tournament, meaning teams that will be better than expected and not necessarily teams that will challenge for the title:

Northern Ireland - in an attempt to save my family jewels I will not mention the obvious reason. They seem to have picked some players up and are doing well in Exhibition play. They obviously sucked last two years but they seem to be going in the right direction.

Chile - if they have some of the El Salvador players they may do quite well.

Columbia - again they have done well in Exhibition and who knows who is in their final roster.

Potugal - they made it to the playoffs last year so they aren't really a surprise team but maybe this year they will win a playoff game or at least put in a good showing.

I don't know if anyone reads the blogs on the Team Canada website but I found it quite interesting that in one of their topics the administrator seems to "out" one of the people posting. The administrator tells everyone the guy was sending from a computer at the Education building in the University of Manitoba. I would think that narrows it down for some of the team Canada people. And the guy didn't seem to be saying things that were that bad. They seem to be a little touchy over there!

Part of the fun of these things is posting anonymously. It allows for a little more freedom. Some people abuse it but most keep it pretty tame. If everyone knows everyone, it would be a pretty boring blog because no one would want to offend another person (or they wouldn't want to get caught doing it).

Wow... reading these posts really grinds my gears when people don't really have a sniff what there talking about. I don't care which team you are or what you are doing this year. Jamaica is and will always be a top 3 team in this tourney. Why? Because they have proved it time and time again. Like the last 3 years. All this garbage talk about player losses is soooo much garbage because we are only losing 2 players. Shane Oglivie DIDN'T I repeat DIDN'T even play last year!!! and what happened still placed in the medal round. Next thing, Yes justin is a force but we aren't stupid of course we are going to replace him with another force. So thats taken care of. Next thing, Amilcar is a baller! what do you think we are going to do??? Replace him with another baller! Karmal (amilcar brother) played defence and can be replaced so no big deal. Sooo until we lose and dont go onto the medal round. Jamaica is and will be a force to be reckoned with. done. Get your facts straight and by the way.....For all you that don't know Kevin is still ballin at 30+ will you guys still be ballin against 18-25yr olds when your 30+???? Nope..I don't think so.

If Jamaica had all these "ballers" waiting in the wings. Why haven't they been on the team before? Where have they been balling this whole time? Were they balling for another team or were they on a balling sabbatical? Or maybe Jamaica just likes finishing 3rd. Can't figure that one out.

jamaican balla: so...are you saying Jamaica is better for losing those players? Every other top team has improved and made key pickups, but Jamaica hasn't done anything. They lost their best forward, 2nd best midfielder and now their goalie too. You might replace them, but they aren't going to have the same impact as the other guys.

Wait a minute, why are you now ranking Jamaica 3rd? Are you saying that we're still able to get at least 3rd (because we like it so much) without or TOP 2 players.....hmmm. Nah we are at least 7th best cuz we lost Amilcar and Justin..........

Jamaican Balla, please do not comment unless you put "balla" somewhere in your comment and that does not include in your name. You can use it as a noun, verb, adjective or whatever you want but you have to use "balla" somewhere. It just isn't cool unless you do it.

As A Balla, I respect all Ballas and that includes women. I for one love watching women's soccer because some of those chicks have some skill plus there usually in great shape and some are pretty hot (kash's sister). It doesn't get any better than having a chick thats in shape and its from playing soccer.

that's a pretty even distribution of El Salvador players. It's not like every single one is an impact player, but still good to know.

And as for that video...I'm sick of people complaining that there are a bunch of "haters of women's soccer." Nobody hates it, it's just that in this tournament, the excitement and skill level surrounding the men's tournament is much higher.

Balla- Hahaha Kash will like that...

You want to see the difference between men and women? Check this video out.
